Good dental health is important. Research links the health of your mouth to the health of your heart, brain, and immune system. Good oral health also means avoiding problems like cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. Here are tips on maintaining your dental health:

Brush Twice a Day

Plaque, which is a sticky film of bacteria, constantly forms on your teeth. Brushing with a soft-bristled brush is the best way to remove plaque and avoid tooth decay. Dentists recommend brushing at least twice a day. In the morning and at night before bed are good times. Some people benefit from brushing three times a day, but you can brush too much and damage your tooth enamel. For most people, twice a day for two minutes each time is enough.

Floss Once a Day

Flossing removes plaque from between your teeth where a brush can’t reach. Flossing also helps prevent gum disease by removing plaque from along your gum line! Many people forget to floss, but it’s an essential part of maintaining good dental health. It’s best to floss before brushing, so your toothbrush picks up any remaining food debris and plaque. Use a clean piece of floss for each tooth.

Don’t Smoke or Use Other Tobacco Products

Tobacco has serious impacts on your health, including your dental health. Smoking and tobacco stain your teeth, inflame your gums, and can cause mouth cancers. Because tobacco weakens your immune system, it’s also harder to recover from gum disease and oral surgery.

Visit the Dentist at Least Twice a Year

You may take great care of your teeth at home, but you still need to see a dentist for professional cleanings and exams. We remove tartar (which is hardened plaque), check for problems like cavities or gum disease, and polish your smile. Most people only need check-ups every six months!
