If you are about to go in for dental implant surgery, we’re here to help you find out what you should avoid after the procedure.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are appliances that function as replacement tooth roots so that a missing tooth can be replaced. Metal frames or posts, dental implants are surgically placed into your jawbone so they may bond with the bone to become the strong foundation upon which false teeth can be replaced. They are a more attractive alternative to dentures, since dentures often don’t fit perfectly and slip around in your mouth, and dental bridges, which involve grinding down healthy teeth so they can support the false tooth. Dental implants also look a lot more natural than other tooth replacement treatments because they function exactly like a tooth root and the replacement tooth can be made to fit right in with your natural teeth. Dental implants can last for a long time if they are properly cared for by brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and eating a healthy diet high in fiber, minerals, and vitamins, and low in sugar and carbs.

How Are Dental Implants Placed?

The first step in the dental implant procedure is to drill into your jaw bone and screw the implant into your jawbone. Don’t worry, you’re under sedation for this part! Then, as you heal, the bone in your jaw will begin to grow around the implant so it holds it in place. It can take several months for the bone to fuse completely with the dental implant. Once it has, we’ll place the artificial replacement teeth which are custom made to match the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth so they’ll blend in perfectly.

What Should I Avoid After Dental Implant Surgery?

After your dental implant surgery, it’s important to avoid solid foods. This is because you don’t want food particles to get lodged in the wound. For the first two days you should only eat liquids such as pudding, applesauce, ice cream, or soup. After that you can introduce semi-liquid foods, like eggs, pasta, mashed potatoes, and pancakes, to your diet. Once a week is up, you can resume your normal diet, but to be safe avoid crunchy and hard foods like popcorn and nuts. It’s also important to keep physical activity to a minimum right after the surgery, resting for a few days and then slowly increasing activity after that. Be sure to avoid bending and any heavy exercise during the first week. Additionally, don’t smoke or drink alcohol after dental implant surgery.
