These days everyone seems to be obsessed with straighter, whiter teeth as people now understand the value of a having a dazzling white smile. In fact, if all of your friends have gleaming white smiles, then chances are you’re feeling a little left out.
Here at Chesterfield dentistry we often recommend teeth or dental bonding for those patients whose smile is less than perfect but only has a few minor issues. So, let’s take a closer look at what’s involved.
Dental bonding is a cosmetic technique that we use on a regular basis, sometimes to fill teeth and others to straighten and whiten a smile. A soft pliable resin is used which we can shape and mold onto the teeth. It can be used in this way to close gaps, repair chipped teeth, and even whiten your smile. The great thing about this treatment is that it can be completed in just one dental visit and doesn’t need any tooth enamel to be removed, as is the case with veneers, for instance.
Not everyone can get their teeth bonded. If you have an under or over bite for example, then teeth bonding won’t fix it. It’s a cosmetic procedure which is more for people who have healthy teeth but don’t particularly like the way they look.
First, a bonding agent is applied to your teeth to help make the teeth bonding resin stick. Then the composite resin is applied and carefully shaped before being set with a special light. That done, your teeth are given a quick polish and hey presto – a brand new whiter smile.
You’ll need to attend regular dental exams since the bonding can chip and stain and you should avoid eating any food that’s too hard. Best not keep that bar of chocolate in the fridge!
Veneers are another option for straighter, whiter teeth but the process is totally different from teeth bonding. Veneers are usually made from porcelain because it looks more like your natural teeth. To get them fitted, however, a thin slice of tooth enamel has to be removed so that your veneers fit flush with the rest of your teeth.
While they last longer than dental bonding, it is a more invasive procedure which can’t be reversed. Should a bonded tooth chip or crack it can easily be repaired whereas a veneer would have to be replaced. Veneers are also more expensive than teeth bonding.
Even though dental bonding can cost from $300 to $600 per tooth, you don’t have to have all of your teeth done. In fact, since you only really see the front 4, this would probably suffice.
