Teeth in a Day streamlines the conventional dental implant process by replacing all of the teeth in one arch with an implant-supported denture immediately following tooth extraction and in a single appointment. Find out more in today’s blog post.

Teeth in a Day also known as All-on-4 or All-on-6 dental implants can be a good solution for edentulous patients who wish to replace all of their teeth but don’t want to be left walking around without any teeth. This post explains the procedure and how to care for teeth in a day to ensure their success and longevity. So, without further ado, let’s get started.

What are Teeth in a Day?

Teeth in a Day is one of many names for an implant procedure known as immediate loading. In essence, it’s a surgical procedure that omits some of the steps taken in conventional implant surgery. Let us explain …

With traditional dental implants, a patient has their implants placed into the jawbone and then has to wait several weeks for them to fuse with the surrounding bone in a process known as osseointegration. Once fusion has successfully occurred and the implants have stabilized, it’s time to attach the prosthesis which, depending on the number of implants, might be a dental crown, a bridge, or a denture, to complete the dental implant procedure. From start to finish, this procedure can take six months or even longer.

Teeth in a Day is a procedure that provides patients with a functioning set of dentures and restores esthetics immediately after the implants have been positioned.  While we don’t have an exact statistic for the success rate of Teeth in Day implants, a recent study conducted with patients receiving immediate loading single crowns averaged 97.4% after 4 years.

What’s involved in the procedure for Teeth in a Day?

  • The process starts with a CT scan of the patient’s jaw to determine where to place the implants.
  • A fixed denture providing reliable functionality is crafted to attach to the implants.
  • Once the denture has been received from the lab, it’s time to call the patient into the office to remove any damaged teeth.
  • Following tooth extraction, the implants are placed and the temporary denture is attached for the patient to wear during the healing period.
  • Once osseointegration has occurred, the abutments are attached and impressions are taken to craft a permanent denture to replace the temporary one.
  • A few appointments may be necessary to get your new teeth looking just as you would like them to and once they’re approved, we’ll attach the new denture to the implants. There are no further surgeries required because you’ve already completed that stage.

Rest assured, these permanent new teeth will be expertly shaped, and colored, and the bite checked, for a healthy, fully functioning smile that looks completely natural.

So, now you know what’s involved with Teeth in A Day implants, let’s look at ways to care for them.

Caring For Teeth In A Day

  1. Maintain good oral health – The key to success with any type of dental implant treatment is firstly to ensure you seek out an experienced dental implant surgeon and secondly, to maintain good oral health with an effective dental hygiene routine at home coupled with regular dental checkups and cleans. Some dentists recommend checkups every 6 to 8 months so they can keep a close eye on your implants, but this will depend on your particular situation.
  2. Stop smoking

While smoking doesn’t exclude a patient from having Teeth in a Day implants research shows implant failure in smokers is significantly higher than in non-smokers. While we don’t judge patients for smoking, we do emphasize the implications it can have on the long-term success of their implant treatment. Besides, not smoking improves both oral and overall health and that’s got to be a good thing, right?

  1. What to eat with your first set of new teeth

By this, we mean the temporary denture that is fitted to the implants on the day your teeth are extracted. These teeth are normally crafted from a composite material to resemble natural teeth and will be worn permanently for around 8-12 weeks while the implants heal and for 24 hours a day.

It’s best to take things slowly at first, since you will have to get accustomed to the feel of your new teeth and may feel a little nervous about accidentally biting your tongue or lips when eating. We recommend sticking to a relatively soft diet at first, and foods that can just be cut into small bite-sized pieces.

  1. Eating with your permanent fixed denture

Once you’ve got your new teeth, around 3 months later, you can eat all the foods that you would with your natural teeth. Because the dentures are anchored into your jaw, there’s no danger of them slipping or sliding out and the bite force is better than with conventional dentures that rest on the bony ridge in the mouth. Furthermore, because the implants act as artificial tooth roots, your jawbone will retain its structure. If you previously wore a conventional denture, you’ll find you can taste your food as there’s no bulky plate covering your upper palate.

What are the benefits of Teeth in a Day?

There are several advantages associated with the Teeth in a day procedure. These include:

  • There is no time spent without your teeth so your facial shape remains the same and you can still bite and chew your food and speak clearly.
  • The temporary denture provides added protection while your implants are fusing with the bone.
  • You can confidently smile throughout your treatment without fear of embarrassment.
  • Because most of the treatment planning is carried out in the background, ahead of the surgery, the procedure is relatively quick, and since the implants are strategically inserted to maximize healthy bone, there’s usually no need for bone grafting.
