It will soon be the fourth of July Independence Day Celebrations and at Chesterfield Dentistry we can’t wait. Family gatherings, cookouts, and fireworks – what’s not to like about that?
We don’t wish to put a dampener on the celebrations but we don’t want your teeth to go out with a bang either! It’s easy to indulge yourself with lots of sugary laden treats that are traditionally eaten on this special day. So to ensure you have a fab 4th July and remain free of tooth decay, we’ve put together a few top tips to keep your mouth healthy and your teeth safe while you enjoy the party.
Independence day wouldn’t be the same without burgers on the BBQ and since meat contains phosphorous it’s also good for your teeth and gums. Good so far, but why not switch out the white burger bun for a whole wheat bun? It’s better for your teeth because it won’t stick to them as much plus whole grains slow down the bacteria which produces acids. Patriotic parfaits are ridiculously simple to make and like cheese yogurt contains protein and calcium for strong teeth and gums. Yogurt also helps combat the harmful bacteria which can cause tooth decay, but if you can, choose a sugar-free yogurt.
Hot July days can make you sweat and without taking in sufficient fluids you run the risk of dehydration. Replenish lost fluids by drinking plenty of water instead of soda, beer, and sports drinks. Sugars contained in these drinks can really harm your teeth – yes, beer really has got sugar in it! Water helps to neutralize acids and tops up your saliva levels too. Saliva acts as a natural mouthwash and contains minerals and proteins which combat the acids that harm tooth enamel.
Snacking all day long is inevitable with tables heaving with yummy food at July 4th celebrations. Snacking is bad for your teeth because sugar has longer to linger after all do you really know anyone who brings their toothbrush along to a party? Why is brushing your teeth important? Because it rids your mouth of sticky sugary plaque which in turn causes decay. That said, you can still keep your teeth clean without brushing by chewing on sugar-free gum. Chewing stimulates the production of saliva which in turn helps to remove food particles.
Finally, the last of our dental safety tips is not to use your teeth as tools. You really shouldn’t be using your teeth to open that bottle of beer or soda. You could break your tooth for heaven’s sake, and that would be painful both for you and your wallet.
If you want healthy strong teeth and gums then ditch the sugary foods and include more water, green vegetables, fresh fruit, whole grains, and dairy into your diet. Also, remember to schedule regular 6 monthly checks with Dr. Akinwande for preventative care.
If you’re due a 6-month check then call our friendly team on (314) 469 6429 and if we don’t speak before, enjoy your Independence Day celebrations.
