Dental crowns are one of the most commonly used dental procedures here at Chesterfield Dentistry but what are they and what are they used for?

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a sort of ‘cap’ which is placed over a tooth. It’s typically made from porcelain and matched to the color of your natural teeth for a seamless finish. So let’s take a look at its many uses in dentistry.

Protection

When a tooth is worn down, broken, or chipped it can feel uncomfortable in the mouth and be painful to chew with. In addition, if a tooth is badly cracked or decayed and the damage is too extensive to use a tooth filling then it may be repaired with a dental crown. Once any decay has been removed the tooth is covered with a custom crown to protect it from further damage and to protect what’s left of it.

Cover a dental implant

One of the most common uses of a dental crown is to replace one or more missing teeth and these are used in conjunction with dental implants to create a permanent solution to missing teeth. In the case of a single tooth replacement, the titanium implant will be implanted into the jawbone where after a short period of time, it fuses with the surrounding bone. Once this has occurred, it will be topped with a dental crown. In the case of denture support, usually, 4 implants are all that’s needed to prevent slippage. Special hooks are attached to the dentures which connect onto the implants in order that the patient can pop their dentures on and off for cleaning. Strength and functionality are restored with both of these options.

A dental bridge

In cases where the patient doesn’t want, or can’t have dental implants, a dental bridge is the best solution. Typically the teeth at either end of the ‘gap’ are used to secure the dental bridge. The teeth are shaped to fit the dental crowns and the bridge (containing crowns to replace the missing teeth) is secured to these and cemented firmly in place. Since the crowns are custom made the restoration looks and feel natural.

Protect a root canal

A porcelain crown is also associated with root canal treatment. Once the root canal has carried out treatment, the patient will often be called back for a crown to be fitted. This serves to strengthen what is left of the damaged tooth and keeps it free from infection.

Improve tooth appearance

Finally, we can also use dental crowns to improve the appearance of a patient’s tooth or teeth. Often they are used to conceal stains or misshapen teeth and are carefully color matched to the surrounding teeth to give a beautiful natural smile.
