At Chesterfield Dentistry, we offer patients a variety of restorative dental solutions in Chesterfield, MO. In this blog post, we give an overview of two such options: dental crowns and dental bridges.

Dental Crowns 101

A dental crown is used to improve the appearance and strength of a tooth. It is a custom-crafted cap that fits snugly over a tooth. This tooth could be, for example: weakened by decay; cracked; chipped; discolored; or irregularly shaped. By placing a crown over your natural tooth, the crown can improve both the function and appearance of your smile.

The process to get a dental crown first involves a consultation with our friendly team. We’ll evaluate your unique needs and give you a cost estimate for your treatment plan. Your natural tooth may require some preparation, and we’ll also need to take impressions so that your crown will be a perfect fit. Once your crown is complete, we’ll make sure it feels comfortable and snug, and that you are satisfied with how it looks.

Dental Bridges 101

A dental bridge is an appliance that is used to fill the gaps left by one or more missing teeth located next to each other in the mouth. The bridge consists of a realistic-looking fake tooth sandwiched between two dental crowns on either two natural teeth or two dental implants. These adjacent teeth support the bridge so that it does not move around when you eat, speak, smile, laugh, etc.

If you still have healthy natural teeth adjacent to the gap being filled, they will be prepared for dental crowns. But if you have several missing teeth in a row or your teeth are compromised by decay, you’ll need dental implants to replace these teeth and to anchor your bridge. This involves the insertion of small metal posts into your jawbone. When these areas heal, the implants are topped with dental crowns. For those missing several teeth, implants can prevent the shrinkage of your jawbone by acting like replacement tooth roots.
