Accelerated Orthodontics – How Fast Braces Treatment Works
When patients are told that they need orthodontic braces, one of the first questions they often ask is “how long does it take?”

When patients are told that they need orthodontic braces, one of the first questions they often ask is “how long does it take?” Normally, patients can expect fixed braces treatment to last anywhere between 18 and 24 months. Yet, for some people, the thought of having a set of braces permanently attached to their teeth for 12 months of more is enough to deter them from undergoing the process. This is despite the great results that they regularly produce.

Fortunately, orthodontic technology has advanced over the years and now, patients can also benefit from accelerated orthodontics. Also known as ‘fast braces’ this method has become known for its speedy treatment and outstanding results.

In this article, we’ll explain what accelerated braces are, how they work, how they can help patients and whether they are right for you. So without further ado, let’s get started…

Firstly, what is accelerated orthodontics treatment and how does it work?

Fast braces are primarily designed to tackle cosmetic problems associated with the front teeth e.g. those that are visible when you smile. There are several prominent manufacturers of accelerated orthodontic treatments including FastBraces, C-Fast and the company that we partner with here at Chesterfield Dentistry – Six Month Smiles. Typically they are on paper at least, very similar to conventional fixed metal or ceramic braces treatments.

For example, most accelerated treatments consist of a set of brackets which are secured one-by-one to the outer-facing side of each tooth using a strong bonding agent. Then, a set of archwires are threaded through to provide the force or tension. This is a similar process to conventional fixed brace orthodontics.

However, the devil is in the detail when it comes to accelerated orthodontics. The specially shaped bracket and wiring of fast braces treatments work together to deliver the right amount of force (torque) necessary to move the whole tooth (crown and root) in one stage and with less effort. This is instead of the two-stage movement process (the crown and then the root) of conventional braces.

How accelerated orthodontics can help patients

There are many reasons why a person would want or need fast teeth straightening. It could be that they have an upcoming function or family event they need to look their best for, or it could just be that they want a speedy solution to a cosmetic problem. Either way, accelerated orthodontics offer a speedy solution to those looking to make small cosmetic tweaks or adjustments to their smile without making major changes to their bite.

Are fast orthodontic treatments right for me?

It’s not unusual for older patients to believe that orthodontic treatment is only for teens and young adults. In fact. it’s a common belief that once a person has reached a certain age, the ability to undergo orthodontic braces treatment is no longer a viable option. This simply isn’t true. Teeth straightening using fixed or removable braces can be performed on people of all ages. The only criteria for fast orthodontic treatment are that it isn’t designed to correct complex adjustments or major bite issues. In these cases, other full-term orthodontic treatments may be a better option.
