What Are Dental Implants

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts that are designed to replace natural tooth roots after tooth loss. They are surgically placed into the jawbone using advanced, computer-guided technology. Dental implants permanently fuse with the jawbone and provide a completely stable base for false replacement teeth to attach to.

The Dental Implant Surgery

During the dental implant procedure, the oral surgeon uses state-of-the-art technology and precise 3D scans to map out the placement of the implants. Then, they proceed to make tiny incisions in the gum line in order to place the implants. Once the implants are in place, the oral surgeon will sew up the incisions. Most patients receive high levels of sedation during dental implant placement and will be asleep or in a dream-like state while the oral surgeon performs the procedure.

Post-Op Care & Healing

After the surgery, the oral surgeon will provide the patient with a complete list of guidelines and instructions to ensure they have a quick, speedy recovery. These instructions will include cleaning tips, dietary restrictions, post-op appointments, medicine recommendations, and more. The main goal is for the implants to successfully fuse with the jawbone, which can take anywhere from two to six months. Once they are fused in place, the patient’s dentist will follow up with them to design and craft their custom replacement teeth. The replacement teeth can either be dental crowns, bridges, or dentures depending on how many teeth they’re missing. Once they are attached to the implants, the patient can start enjoying a full smile once more!
