Because of its speedy treatment times, affordable prices, and instant results, teeth whitening is by far the most popular cosmetic dental treatment in the world today. Now with easy access to a whole host of take-home and chair-side teeth whitening treatments it’s never been easier and safer to have brighter, whiter teeth.
In comparison to over-the-counter teeth whitening kits and those you might buy online, dental take-home kits and chair-side teeth whitening procedures are carefully controlled and use a stronger gel solution; therefore they deliver faster, more effective results.
Here at Chesterfield Dentistry we use a revolutionary form of teeth whitening known as Opalescence.
Chair-side teeth whitening
If you have limited time and are after speedy results then come and talk to us about our Opalescence Boost In-Office treatment. Taking less than 1 hour to complete, as the name suggests it’s performed right here in our dental office using a 40% hydrogen peroxide-based, power bleaching gel.
So how does the process work?
After applying a whitening gel to the outside of the teeth a light is used to heat it. This activates the oxygen molecules contained within the hydrogen peroxide which in turn break down the bonds that hold the staining in place. As it continues to work, any staining is lifted clean away and is replaced by the oxygen molecules which spread, forming a barrier. This gives your new teeth their fabulous Opalescent appearance. After a few days many patients see an improved whiteness of up to 8 shades lighter as the molecules contained within the gel continue to work their magic.
Dental take-home teeth whitening kits
In addition to our Opalescence chair-side treatments we also offer dental take-home kits in the form of Opalescence PF. They allow the user to whiten their teeth in the comfort of their own home. Available in a range of flavors and formulations the whitening gel is placed into special trays which are custom-made to fit your teeth. This is different from the gel used in chair-side teeth whitening as it contains potassium nitrate and fluoride which helps to minimize any sensitivity. The custom trays are worn for around 8 hours per day (usually at night) and after 1-2 weeks, patients can expect to see whiter, brighter teeth.
Whitening treatments on the Go
If you’re looking for a speedy professional alternative to over-the-counter kits then we offer hassle-free teeth whitening in the form of Opalescence Go. Ready to use straight from the packet, there’s no need for you to have impressions taken or wear custom trays. Available in tasty peach or melon fruit flavours, as well as mint, the powerful gel formula also contains potassium nitrate and fluoride (PF) to help reduce cavities and minimize tooth sensitivity. It’s available in 6%, 10%, and 15% concentrations and is designed to be worn for between 20 and 90 minutes per day for up to 10 days.
Whether you’d prefer overnight whitening treatment in the comfort of your own home, a brighter whiter smile when you’re on the go, or instant results with our In-office treatment, Chesterfield Dentistry in partnership with Opalescence has it covered.
In some cases, Dr Akinwande and the team might also suggest combination treatments whereby a course of in-home treatment might be followed up with a chair-side treatment to achieve that perfect whiter smile.
Is teeth whitening suitable for me?
Teeth whitening is best suited to those who have relatively strong teeth and gums. Therefore those suffering from gum disease may not be the best candidates for professional teeth whitening. In addition some pregnant women also develop sensitive teeth and should seek advice before opting for teeth whitening treatment.
How white is it possible to get my teeth
A change of just 2 or 3 shades has the ability to make a noticeable difference to anyone’s smile. Of course, the level of teeth whitening depends on a number of factors including how badly stained they are and whether your teeth respond well to teeth whitening. On average professional teeth whitening can achieve somewhere between 4-8 shades lighter over time.
How long does the process last?
Firstly, teeth whitening isn’t permanent and the length of time it lasts depends upon whether you smoke, drink coffee, tea, coke, or red wine, as all of these things can stain teeth. For those who find it hard to eliminate these things, they may require touch up whitening treatments every 6 months or so, while those who stick to drinking non-staining beverages such as water may go 2-3 years before they need another treatment.
Does the process hurt?
It’s normal to experience tooth sensitivity after tooth whitening treatment, however this should subside after a few days. Any tooth sensitivity can usually be brought under control using over-the-counter pain killers such as Tylenol, but to avoid making your sensitive teeth worse, avoid ice cold or extremely hot drinks or foods for the duration of your sensitivity.
