Pediatric or children’s dentistry is a specialist dental area that concentrates on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral health issues in children. Here at Chesterfield Dentistry our team have specific training which allows us to provide dental care for children of all ages. As such we’re pleased to welcome children from very young age through to adolescence.

As well as comprehensive care we provide a range of treatments ranging from dental sealants through to treatment for gum disease and injuries. We’re also happy to advise parents about ways that they can get their children to adopt best nutritional and hygiene practices, hopefully setting them up to have great teeth later on in life.

How old should my child be when he or she first visits the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) advise that young patients begin visiting the dentist when they’re showing signs of their first teeth. This is usually somewhere between 9-12 months or sometimes earlier. Children should consider visiting the dentist periodically after this point to help prevent childhood gum disease and tooth decay.

What specialist training does a pediatric dentist have?

A dentist who has an interest in pediatrics will usually have the same credentials as your normal family dentist. However they will also have had two additional years of training. Normally this is in areas such as the ongoing treatment of babies, children, and teens and children with special needs. More importantly, Dr Akinwande and the team are trained to not only understand the dental needs of your child but their psychological and emotional needs too.
