Without doubt one of the main foundations of dentistry is preventative care. In order to prevent gum disease and cavities from occurring, regular visits to your dentist are essential. The American Dental Association suggests that patients should visit their local dentist for regular check-ups and hygiene cleans every 6 months. Yet according to the centers for Disease Control only 57% of Americans aged over 65 attend the dentist regularly, while 61% of adults under 65 go regularly.
Support for your at-home dental care
If you look at regular dental check-ups as support for your home dental care then you’re on the right track. While regular brushing and flossing should keep the majority of bacteria at bay, professional teeth cleaning eradicates any hard-to-shift tartar leaving your teeth both clean and healthy.
In addition to removing tartar build-up, regular check-ups mean that any problems or issues that mightn’t be noticeable by the patient can be spotted early and dealt with. Often this means quick treatments that help to stave off cavities, decay, the onset of gum disease, plus a whole host of other dental related problems. Rather than seeing a dental check-up as something that gets in the way of your already busy life, why not look at it as insurance for great dental well-being?
At Chesterfield Dentistry we want our patients to feel relaxed and comfortable and we do everything we can to make sure this happens. What’s more we don’t judge, so if you haven’t visited the dentist for a while, then no problem. We welcome anyone and we’ll do all we can to treat any dental problems you may have.
Do I really need my teeth professionally cleaned?
Even if you brush and floss after every meal and before going to bed, bacteria will find their way into tiny crevices, pits, and grooves. These can be hard to access with a normal daily cleaning routine. Over time if bacteria is not eradicated by professional cleaning it can build-up and cause gum disease, and worse still tooth loss.
What should I expect during a consultation?
Dr Akinwande will first of all carry out a visible examination of your teeth. If this is your first visit, or you haven’t been for a while, then X-rays may also be taken to allow a closer and more comprehensive view. After talking with Dr Akinwande about any oral health problems you may or may not have, you’ll be seen by our hygienist who will carry out the cleaning. Special instruments are used to remove any hardened plaque or tartar and finally your teeth are brushed and polished for a deep down clean.
Is there anything I need to follow during visits?
Simply ensure you maintain regular and thorough brushing (at least twice a day) and regular flossing (at least once a day). It’s also important to use a fluoridated toothpaste and drink fluoridated water.
